Here's How We Got Started
The Beginning
Swiss and German missionaries of the Basel Mission established a dispensary at Betgeri to respond to the recurring epidemics of plague and cholera in 1902
New Beginning
The Birth of Basel Mission CSI Hospital
In 1956, the hospital’s administration shifted from the Basel Mission of Switzerland to the Church of South India, Karnataka Northern Diocese (KND), marking the end of missionary oversight and the start of a new era of local governance and growth.
Growth
Under Dr. Solomon S Chelliah leadership, the hospital modernised its services, introducing the region’s first ICU and dialysis unit, significantly strengthening critical and renal care for the wider rural population.
Expansion
Led by Dr. Ajay Raju, CSI Basel Mission Hospital has grown into a 150-bed, multi-speciality institution offering super-specialty services in Cardiology, Neurosurgery, and other advanced disciplines. The hospital now proudly holds NABH accreditation.
Dr. Raju has also strengthened the hospital’s educational mission by establishing a Nursing College, a DNB training programme, and a GDA training programme.

To strengthen healthcare in the region, we established the College of Nursing in 2023, offering undergraduate education and hands-on clinical training7.
